With the backdrop of a mid-western town, the 7 Tony nominated musical “The Prom” is reaching a larger audience. Moving from intolerance to acceptance through getting to know each other is the message.
When the high school PTA decides to cancel prom rather than allow a same sex couple to attend, four Broadway actors hoping for a comeback decide to further their careers by becoming unwanted advocates for the teen couple. Through it all, everyone’s strengths and flaws are reveled. The musical shows how fear is turned to hatred, how people can be open and learn from one another, and there is a great song about how one character “escapes” into the theater.
